Bit Sketchi Bendigo – Building a Creative Community, One Sketch at a Time

In late 2025, I launched Bit Sketchi Bendigo with a simple goal—to bring people together to enjoy urban sketching in a fun, relaxed and welcoming environment. The idea was to encourage people to slow down, observe the world around them and capture the essence of a place through quick, quirky sketches, regardless of their artistic experience.

Thanks to the support of the City of Greater Bendigo, the response has been incredible. The first seven events sold out, with each session attracting more than 30 participants. Families, friends, couples and individuals of all ages and abilities came together to explore Bendigo with sketchbooks in hand, creating not only artwork but also new friendships and lasting memories.

Over the series, we've sketched some of Bendigo's most iconic locations, including:

• Dai Gum Loong in the Hargreaves Mall

We also held several pop-up sketching events, including a relaxed Picnic in Rosalind Park and an evening of sketching at the City Family Hotel.

What makes Bit Sketchi different is the approach. Rather than striving for perfect perspective or detailed realism, participants are encouraged to arrange elements of the scene in a way that feels natural and creative to them. It's about capturing the character and atmosphere of a place—not producing a perfect drawing.

All materials are supplied, making it easy for anyone to join in. At each event, I demonstrate the sketch step-by-step on a large scale while participants create their own version on A4 paper. Everyone interprets the scene differently, and that's what makes each sketch unique.

One of the most rewarding parts of Bit Sketchi has been seeing the confidence and sense of community that has grown among participants. The feedback has been truly heartwarming.

Watching people leave each event smiling, inspired and proud of what they've created has been incredibly rewarding. Bit Sketchi has become much more than a sketching event—it's a creative community where everyone belongs.
