Our Street

Being chosen by Angie to create “Our Street”, was one of those ‘meant to be’ moments.

Thanks to Henry Sheahan Productions for producing this video

I live in Bendigo, Victoria, and I called in to look at an exhibition of a local artist that I admired. When I was there, I bought a piece to remember the exhibition, and that’s when I met Angie.

Angie and I exchanged niceties, and I explained that I loved the artist’s work, as I too was an artist who was passionate about urban sketching. Angie was instantly interested and I showed her some of my work.

It was at that moment, when I saw her eyes light up, and her mind start thinking, and she exclaimed, “You might be just the artist I am looking for!”.

Angie continued to tell me of an artistic idea that she had for a gift for her Husband, Matt. The gift was going to celebrate their 25th Wedding Anniversary. It was a celebration of their 25 years together and all the homes that they had owned during that time.

There were 7 homes and one block of land. Each home was lived in, and lovingly renovated, special little touches added and friendships formed with neighbours.

These homes would be placed together as one artwork to become “Our Street”.

Angie was keen to have this commission artwork created in an organic, watercolour like style. Looking at my sketchy urban artworks that I am known for, Angie was confident that I could produce this piece. Hearing the look and feel that she wanted for this piece, I suggested that a digital artwork would work best.

We met to gather all the information required, photos of all the homes, pets, specific features of each home, birds, animals, vehicles etc. It was lovely to hear about each of Angie and Matt’s homes from their life and why they were so special.

From here I produced a line drawing of the street, and met with Angie to confirm proportions and finalise details. Colours were also decided upon.

The next meeting included the colour wash and feedback for final adjustments.

This was such a heartwarming project, as Angie would get quite emotional during our meetings and was delighted to see all the unique details that had been added to the artwork. Things like Matt’s motorbike, the dragonfly, cups of tea and of course the corrugated cow!

The final artwork was professionally framed, gifted to Matt, and now hangs with pride in Angie and Matt’s home.

"Kim, thank you so much for realising my dream to capture our journey through 25 years of marriage in an art work. 'Our Street' hangs proudly in our lounge room and is everything I had hope it would be. It is a holder of memories, a talking point, a reminder of how blessed we are and it makes us smile."

I feel so privileged to have been chosen to create this commission piece.

Thank you Angie.
